Frank and Beatrice Lumpkin papers, 1949-2003 (bulk 1974-1986).

Save Our Jobs (SOJ) publicity materials, newspaper clippings, correspondence, press releases, Frank Lumpkin speeches, International Harvester correspondence and publications, Wisconsin Steel correspondence and publications, political campaign promotional brochures and flyers, Progressive Steelworkers Union correspondence and publications, 6 scrapbooks, publications of other organizations allied with SOJ, and items (1957-1959) from the Wooded Highlands Democratic Club of Gary, Indiana. These documents were created or collected by Frank Lumpkin, leader of the Save Our Jobs Committee and his wife, Beatrice Lumpkin, while writing a book about these activities: "Always Bring a Crowd!: The Story of Frank Lumpkin, Steel Worker." After Wisconsin Steel Works at 107th Street and Torrence Avenue in Chicago (Ill.) closed its gates without advance notice on March 28, 1980, the Save Our Jobs Committee of the Wisconsin Steelworkers labor union struggled to have pensions and back pay reinstated. Frank Lumpkin, a Wisconsin Steel worker for over 30 years, headed SOJ with a coalition of African American, European American, and Mexican American steelworkers. This collection documents the struggle with Wisconsin Steel and its parent companies, International Harvester/Navistar and Envirodyne. SOJ won a series of court cases giving Wisconsin Steel workers small payments.
